Lendonwood Gardens will be the beneficiary of an iris sale Friday and Saturday, September 25-26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the botanical garden in Grove.  Grown and donated by Lendonwood board members Pauline Hale and Jim Corbridge, the perennial bulbs include 24 cultivars and a wide range of colors.

Most of the varieties are priced at $3.00 each, with a few extraordinary ones at $5.00, with proceeds designated for the continued maintenance of the Gardens.  Hale said many of the varieties originally cost in the $12.00 — $16.00 range, with some over $20.00.

The sale will take place at the back entrance of the garden, due to construction of a new Welcome Center in front.  Hale and Corbridge will be available to answer questions about growing irises, as well as providing printed tips.

“We are delighted to share these irises with the public, in support of Lendonwood,” Corbridge said.  “Over the years, we collected many different types for our home garden and have tried to keep them identified and labeled for purposes of sharing.”

Many of the bulbs were purchased from iris gardens in Boulder, Colorado; Hondo, New Mexico; and on-line sources. he said.  Photos taken by Hale will be displayed to indicate the various types.

Examples of cultivars in the Lendonwood iris sale include Acoma (light lavender with purple streaking); Wondervu (pale blue); Champagne Elegance (cream and light tan); Matinata (clear purple); Bountiful Harvest (re-bloomer with purple-edged white petals); Beverly Sills (peach-colored petals); and Alpine Twilight (shades of mauve), among others.  Some of the plants are re-bloomers, with flowers returning in late summer and fall.

Hale said irises are among the easiest perennials to plant, care for and maintain.  “These hardy plants require little care, other than dividing every three or four years,” she said.  “Planting is easy as well; just cover the rhizome with an inch or less of soil with good drainage.”

Lendonwood Gardens is supported entirely by volunteer labor and donations.  Memberships are available at various levels.  The eight-acre botanical garden is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk.
